The Feudal System

Picture
The King was the supreme ruler. He received taxes from the Peasants (Villiens), Lords (Barons) and the Knights.  The King gave grants of land to Barons, who then gave grants to Knights, who then allowed Peasants to work and live on the land.  Once the Peasants made food and services, they were forced to compensate the Knights for the right to live on the land and for protection.  Knights used this food and other goods to pay Barons for the land that they were granted.  They also provided protection and military service to the Barons.  Barons in turn provided allegiance to the King by paying taxes.
